Amsterdam to Antwerp River Cruise
Jim and Andrea Siscel
May 2023
Jim and Andrea took a Viking River cruise starting in Amsterdam and ending in Antwerp visiting several Netherland’s locations and Antwerp. In Amsterdam we took a canal tour viewing the buildings, many many houseboats, and a replica of a sailing ship of the Dutch East Indies Company. The same afternoon we visited Keukenhof Gardens. This was the last week-end and the tulips were past their prime, but still beautiful. Next was Hoorn another typical Dutch city where we saw some Dutch dancing with the dancers wearing ealier times clothing.
On to Doordrecht where we sampled Poffertjes, mini pancakes, before continuing to Delft and a tour of the Delft Pottery factory. The following day, we visited the UNESCO site of Kinderdijk and many windmills. A barge trip of the canal by the windmills and visit to the first type of windmill designed with very cramp living quarters.
Nijmegen and Arnhem are known for the World War II history because of the two cities involvement in the September 1944 Operation Market Garden. The British tried unsuccessfully to take the bridges in each city from control of the Germans. Jim visited the Groesbeek Canadian Forces Cemetery and the Nijmegen Freedom Museum. Andrea toured Nijmegen by foot. Viking provides leisure tours for those that want to go slower. We signed up for these tours when they were available.
Andrea took the leisure walking tour of Maastricht and Jim took a bus trip to Aachen, Germany to see Charlemagne’s Cathedral and Treasury. On to Antwerp where we took a Flavors of Antwerp walking tour. We tasted beer, Belgian waffles, chocolate, beef carbonnade for lunch, and a local 37% alcohol liquor, plus a lot of walking. It was Saturday and there were weddings in the cathedral and in the main square.
Sunday, we left the Viking Kavsir, holding 180 passengers, and road a bus to the Brussels airport, where we flew to Amsterdam and then to Madrid. Madrid and Portugal are in the next selection.
