Some Grant Ideas From This Year
- Purchase Bosu balls to use as alternative seating for students who need to “wiggle” even while paying attention.
- Rent a Portable Museum from MOHAI and a Treasure box from the Bothell Historical Society. The trunks contain artifacts, historical photo, documents, slideshows, and digital media that provide the students with hands-on experiences.
- Purchase special pencils, Legos, trinkets, stuffed animals, treats, etc. to use in classroom’s token economy.
- Purchase MP3 players to support all students in classroom, but in particular, those who struggle with anxiety, as identified by a 504 plan. The players will be used with audio books as well as calming music.
- Buy a set of beginning reader books that are high interest yet written at lower guided reading levels. The set contains four copies of each title so that can be used in small group settings.
- Purchase early word reader books to improve and expand a checkout library for first-grade classroom. This should make home reading practice more accessible for families and increase practice time.
- Purchase wired keyboards to connect to the class’s iPads so that students can practice their typing skills outside of the computer lab.
- Purchase a premade mat to use in the robotics and coding club. The new mat will apply students to focus on coding.
- Purchase historical fiction novels centered on Colonial America to be used in a six-week integrated unit for fifth graders.
- Fund a fieldtrip for Hilltop’s three fifth-grade classes to the Living Computer Museum. STEM is a major focus in fifth grade. This will allow students to explore the history of computers.
- Use the funds for three kindergarten classes to visit a local assisted living center where students will deliver valentines and perform for the residents. This will help pay transportation and supply costs.
- Buy Young Teen fiction for students in English as a New Language class. Books written at appropriate reading levels and featuring teenage students of color and reflect the world the students live in and the daily challenges they and their families face.
- Purchase personal thumb drives for each second grade students in classroom. This will allow students to save written work and projects worked on in the computer lab.
- Purchase a Dot and Dash robot kit for use in fifth grade classrooms. The kit activities encourage students to use their imagination and creativity while developing problem-solving skills. Having a robot will allow students to participate in next year’s robotics competition.
