Alice Miller gave her Beauty and Duty presentation at our October 16th luncheon. Alice has a very large collection of military uniforms. She has all parts of the uniform, hats, shoes, purses. She knows the stories of many of the people who wore the uniforms in her collection. As she presented each of the uniforms she told about the individuals who wore them. A story about the Navy poster from WWI was how the young woman in the poster was selected. The Navy said that women could enlist, but when she tried the recruiter said that is wasn't possible. While disagreeing with the recruiter an artist asked her to pose for the poster. The woman lived in the Puget Sound area until her death. She was able to join the military, but got in the wrong line and became a SPAR (Coast Guard) and wore the white uniform as a Yeoman F (Female).
